England scored a stunning 416 against West Indies<\/strong><\/a> on an exciting first day at Trent Bridge, thanks in no small part to Ollie Pope ) excellent performance. The crowd was treated to a feast of boundaries and brisk scoring, with Ben Duckett and Ben Stokes also playing key roles, leaving West Indies to regret the missed chances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duckett’s Beginning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The day started off with a bang indeed, with Ben Duckett kicking off a borderline banger. He went over the fence and made 71 off just 59 balls. Duckett’s attacking approach set the tone as England reached their fifty in just 26 balls, a record in Test cricket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duckett’s innings featured great cover batting, precise chipping and authoritative pulls that made Sears and Joseph look like net bowlers at times. Despite the impending arrival of his first child, Duckett’s focus remained unwavering until he nudged one over to Jason Holder at second slip off Shamar Joseph, ending his brilliant run Performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pope takes center stage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After Zak Crawley left the game early – knocked down by a sharp pass from Alzarri Joseph and eventually sliding to third – it was Pope’s turn. Make a splash. Building on Duckett’s foundation, Pope displayed a masterclass in controlled attack. His innings of 121 off 167 balls was a combination of grace and grit, with shots clearly visible around the wicket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope was also lucky and was dismissed twice before reaching his century. The first reprieve came in the 46th over when Athanaze could not catch a fierce chip ball and the second came in the 54th over when Holder was caught at second slip Bad catch. Pope took advantage of these opportunities to drive England forward, scoring his sixth Test century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stokes and middle-order contribution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Captain Ben Stokes scored a crucial 69, forming a vital partnership with Pope and Jamie Smith. Stokes was as aggressive as ever, but his innings ended with an untimely delivery by Cavan Hodge being caught at deep mid-wicket. Smith also scored 28 before losing to Hodge, continuing the trend of soft dismissals that slightly affected England’s innings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lower position didn’t offer much resistance, with Atkinson, Woakes and Bashir quickly falling down the order. However, the damage had been done and England finished high on the points table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

West indies struggle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It was a mixed day for West Indies. Alzarri Joseph’s early goal was promising, but inconsistency and receiving errors plagued their efforts. Joseph finished with figures of 3-98, which was the bowler’s choice. Sharma Joseph and Kevin Sinclair provided some control, but it was too little, too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Craig Brathwaite’s decision to bowl first on a pitch that seemed suitable for batting may be questioned, especially given the lack of discipline from his bowlers at times. West Indies’ defense, usually a strength, was unusually sloppy and cost them dearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
